There is a long history of dolphins in the bay. Perhaps the most famous was Joca, a solitary dolphin who became a local attraction in the late 1980s. He was known for approaching boats and swimmers and became so well known that the local authorities placed him under special protection. He eventually disappeared, but his story is still remembered around Kotor.
Today, dolphins still occasionally visit Boka bay. Bottlenose dolphins are regularly recorded in the wider area, although seeing one during a particular boat tour is never guaranteed.
That is part of what makes seeing dolphins in the wild so special. You cannot plan the moment or know exactly where they will appear. You might be looking toward the mountains, enjoying the ride, and suddenly notice a fin breaking the surface nearby.
Our captains always keep an eye on the water during the journey, and if dolphins happen to be around, we are happy to point them out. We never promise a sighting, but if you are lucky enough to see them, it can become one of those unexpected memories you take home.
Joca may be gone, but the story of the famous dolphin is still part of Kotor's local history. And every time dolphins are spotted in the bay, it is a small reminder that the waters around Kotor are home to much more than beautiful scenery.
